What my sabbatical taught me: Snapshot #1

Palacio de Bellas Artes / Mexico City, Mexico

In August of my 2022 sabbatical, I traveled to Mexico City and Oaxaca City. Mexico City was a beautiful, open beating heart where I met new people and experienced warmth, kindness and friendship from the lovely folks at the Red Tree House Hotel. Oaxaca City, the first place to which I traveled solo in 2015, was deeply restful and refreshing during my stay at El Callejon Hotel Boutique.

While I love traveling solo, there’s always some vulnerability around navigating a new place by myself. I tend to be on my guard; however, staying at the Red Tree House Hotel was like staying with friends. I felt like I could relax and enjoy the freedom of connecting with people. It reminded me that there are kind strangers who can become friends.

Solo travel reminds me that a different life is possible as I become a stranger in a new place and see the different ways that people live. It reminds me that I have the power and possibility to become who I want to be.
